Europe's Accelerators to Go Dark in 2012

There are some who will breathe a sigh of relief at this news.

Budget cuts force yearlong shutdown of CERN's atom-smashers; Large Hadron Collider will be closed for 'technical reasons' 

CERN, Europe's particle research center, unveiled budget cuts Friday that will force it to close its accelerators for a year in 2012. The new plan reflects little change in the status of CERN's flagship "Big Bang Machine," which had already been scheduled for a yearlong shutdown.
